What is a lip filler?

A lip filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the skin and binds moisture. Injected into the lips, the gel adds volume and shape straight away. The body gradually breaks hyaluronic acid down, so the effect is temporary: for most people a lip filler lasts 6 to 12 months.

Lip fillers can make thin lips fuller, accentuate the lip border and Cupid's bow, reduce a difference between the left and right side, or soften fine, dry lines in the lips. Our starting point is always a natural result: lips that suit your face rather than lips that draw attention.

Reassuring if you are hesitant: a hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved by the doctor if needed.

How much do lip fillers cost? Basic or premium

Lip fillers at Zalat Clinics cost from €125 for 0.5 ml of basic filler (Revolax). A 0.5 ml premium lip filler (Stylage or Juvéderm) costs €160–170 and 1 ml premium €250 (Stylage) or €259 (Juvéderm). What you pay therefore depends on the amount and the product. The price is fixed beforehand, with no extra costs afterwards. We only use CE-marked fillers.

All three are well-established, safe products. Premium fillers come in more variants, which allows the doctor to match the gel more precisely to what you want to achieve, such as soft, natural volume or more definition of the outline. During the free consultation the doctor will advise which filler and how many millilitres suit you. The price is agreed with you beforehand.

0.5 ml or 1 ml lip filler: which suits you?

A 0.5 ml lip filler is a small amount, roughly half a teaspoon. For most people 0.5 ml lip filler gives a subtle but visible difference: a little more volume, a sharper outline or a more even balance between the upper and lower lip. For a first treatment, or if you mainly want a natural result, it is often a good start.

With 1 ml lip filler the difference is more noticeable. There is room to make both lips fuller and refine the shape at the same time. This often suits thinner lips, people who want more volume, or a top-up when some of an earlier filler is still present. More is not automatically better: the right amount depends on your lips, your face and your wishes.

You can see a few client before and after photos on this page; during the free consultation the doctor shows you more examples of 0.5 ml and 1 ml lip filler during the free consultation, so you get a realistic picture. If you would like to read up beforehand, see our knowledge article on the difference between 0.5 ml and 1 ml lip filler, which explains what to expect before and after a 1 ml treatment.

Who are lip fillers suitable for?

Lip fillers are suitable for anyone aged 18 or over who would like fuller, more symmetrical or better-defined lips. They are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active cold sore or inflammation around the mouth, or with a known allergy to the ingredients; if you are prone to cold sores, please let us know in advance. People often choose lip fillers for:

  • thin lips, or lips that have lost volume over the years
  • an indistinct lip outline or a flat Cupid's bow
  • asymmetry between the upper and lower lip or between left and right
  • fine lines in or around the lips

How does the treatment work?

  1. 01

    Free consultation

You discuss your wishes and medical history with the doctor. The doctor looks at the proportions of your face and gives honest advice, including when lip fillers would not suit you. You receive a fixed price.

  2. 02

    Numbing

The lips are numbed with an anaesthetic cream. Most fillers also contain a local anaesthetic, which makes the treatment comfortable for most people.

  3. 03

    Treatment

The doctor injects the filler in small amounts, checking the shape and symmetry throughout. This keeps the result controlled and natural. It takes about 30–45 minutes.

  4. 04

    Free check-up after two weeks

After two weeks the swelling has settled and you see the final result. At the free check-up we assess together whether everything is as you wished.

Aftercare and possible side effects

Right after treatment the lips are usually somewhat swollen and tender. This is normal and subsides over the first few days. You see the final result after about two weeks. Afterwards you can reach the doctor via WhatsApp if you have any questions.

Serious complications are rare. Very rarely, filler can block a blood vessel (vascular occlusion). The doctor knows the anatomy of the lips, works carefully to avoid this and knows how to treat it immediately. Contact us straight away if you notice increasing pain or pale, bluish or blotchy skin.

  • for the first 24 hours: no lip make-up, no exercise, sauna or alcohol
  • do not massage or press on the lips for the first few days
  • swelling, tenderness or a bruise are normal and usually fade within a few days
  • small lumps can feel different in the first weeks and are assessed at the check-up
  • cool your lips during the first few hours with a cold compress wrapped in a cloth, not ice directly on the skin
  • avoid other treatments around the mouth, such as a peel, microneedling or laser, for the first two weeks

Frequently asked questions

Do lip fillers hurt?

Most people find lip fillers very tolerable. The lips are numbed beforehand with a cream, and the filler itself usually contains an anaesthetic too. You mainly feel a light pinprick and some pressure.

How long do lip fillers last?

On average 6 to 12 months. Lips move a lot, so filler is broken down faster there than in other areas. How long it lasts for you depends on factors such as your metabolism and the product chosen.

Is 0.5 ml lip filler enough?

For a first treatment it usually is. For most people 0.5 ml gives a subtle, natural result; with 1 ml the difference is more noticeable. The doctor advises which amount suits your lips during the consultation and shows you examples.

Will it look natural?

That is our starting point. The doctor builds up volume gradually and looks at the proportions of your whole face. If in doubt, we prefer to start with 0.5 ml; more can always be added later.

What is the difference between basic and premium?

Both are CE-marked hyaluronic acid fillers. Premium fillers (Stylage or Juvéderm) come in more variants, so the doctor can match the gel more precisely to your goals. The doctor will advise what suits you during the free consultation.

What can I do if a previous lip filler went wrong?

Give it two weeks first: swelling and small irregularities are normal in that period and the result is not yet final. If the lip filler is then uneven, overfilled or has migrated, the doctor will gladly assess it at a free consultation, including filler placed at another clinic. A hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved by the doctor with the enzyme hyaluronidase, after which the lips can, if desired, be rebuilt calmly after about two weeks. If you have increasing pain or pale, bluish or blotchy skin, contact a doctor immediately.

Can I have just my upper lip filled?

Yes, that is possible. The doctor will always look at the balance between your upper and lower lip, though: in most people the lower lip is slightly fuller, and an upper lip that becomes fuller than the lower lip quickly looks unnatural. Often a small amount divided over both lips gives the most balanced result.

I often get cold sores. Can I still have lip filler?

Usually yes, but not during an active cold sore; we wait until it has fully healed. Injections in the lips can trigger a new cold sore in people who carry the virus. Please mention it beforehand, so the doctor can discuss whether it is sensible to take an antiviral medicine preventively around the treatment.

Where can I read about other people's experiences with lip fillers at Zalat Clinics?

This page shows a few before and after photos, published with our clients’ consent. You can find client reviews on our Google Business Profile, where clients leave them themselves. During the free consultation the doctor will show you examples and answer all your questions.
