Tear trough filler in Rotterdam

A tear trough filler is an injection of soft hyaluronic acid filler that fills the hollow between the lower eyelid and the cheek, so the shadow under the eyes is less visible and you look less tired. At Zalat Clinics in Rotterdam, every tear trough treatment is performed by our BIG-registered doctor personally. Not everyone with under-eye bags is suitable for filler; we will tell you honestly at the free consultation.

What does tear trough filler do?

The tear trough is the groove that runs from the inner corner of the eye diagonally down across the cheek. Through genetics, ageing or weight loss this groove deepens. The resulting shadow looks like eye bags and makes you look tired, even after a good night.

Tear trough filler carefully fills this hollow with a soft hyaluronic acid filler, for example from the Juvéderm or Restylane range. The step to the cheek becomes smaller and the shadow less visible. The doctor often first adds a little support to the cheek, because support from below already softens the tear trough in part.

A tear trough treatment is available from €349. The final price is agreed with you beforehand at the free consultation.

Fillers for under-eye bags: when they help and when they don't

Filler works well for a hollow: a sunken area under the eye that casts a shadow. In that case the filler replaces what is missing.

Puffy bags under the eyes are often something else: the fat pad behind the lower eyelid bulges forward. That is an excess of volume, not a shortage. With clearly bulging fat, a lot of fluid retention or lax skin, filler often makes the area look heavier. In those cases the doctor advises against filler and would rather refer you to a plastic surgeon or eye specialist for eyelid surgery.

People who retain fluid easily around the eyes are usually not suitable either, for example with bags that are clearly puffier in the morning than in the evening, or with swelling and fluid pouches on the cheekbone (malar festoons). Hyaluronic acid binds water, so the swelling can actually increase.

Dark circles under the eyes can be shadow, which filler can help with, or pigmentation and visible blood vessels, which filler changes little.

If filler is not suitable, or you would prefer something more subtle, a hyaluronic acid skin booster can be a gentler alternative. It does not fill the hollow, but makes the thin skin under the eyes firmer and better hydrated, so fine lines and dull skin are less noticeable.

Who is tear trough filler suitable for?

Suitable from age 18 for people with a hollow or shadow under the eyes caused by volume loss. Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and not with an active infection or inflammation around the eyes. The treatment often suits:

  • a visible groove or hollow between the lower eyelid and the cheek
  • tired eyes or a dark shadow despite enough rest
  • reasonably firm skin under the eyes, without large bulging bags

Tear trough filler before and after: what to expect

We do not publish before-and-after photos on the website. At the consultation, the doctor can show you examples so you get a clear picture of what is achievable.

A realistic result is a softer transition between eyelid and cheek and less shadow, especially under overhead light. For most people the hollow does not disappear completely, and that is not the aim: a fully filled tear trough looks unnatural. You see the actual result after about two weeks.

How does the treatment work?

  1. 01

    Free consultation

The doctor determines whether the issue is a hollow, bulging fat, pigmentation or fluid, and advises honestly. If filler does not suit you, we will say so. You receive a fixed price.

  2. 02

    Preparation

The skin is cleansed and disinfected. The filler contains a local anaesthetic; numbing cream can be used if needed.

  3. 03

    Treatment

The doctor usually works with a blunt cannula through one small entry point on the cheek. The filler is placed deep, close to the bone, in small amounts. This takes about 30–45 minutes.

  4. 04

    Free check-up after two weeks

After two weeks the swelling has gone. At the free check-up we assess the result together and whether a small top-up would be worthwhile.

Aftercare and possible side effects

Swelling and small bruises are more common under the thin eye skin than elsewhere and usually fade within a week; sometimes mild swelling lasts longer. If filler sits too superficially, it can show through the skin with a bluish tint (the Tyndall effect). This can be corrected by dissolving the filler.

Serious complications are rare. Very rarely, filler can block a blood vessel (vascular occlusion); around the eyes this can, in exceptional cases, threaten vision. The doctor works with a cannula and knows how to act immediately. Contact us at once with increasing pain, pale or blotchy skin or any change in vision. You can reach the doctor via WhatsApp.

  • for the first 24 hours: no exercise, sauna or alcohol
  • sleep with your head slightly raised for the first few nights
  • do not rub or massage around the eyes in the first week

Frequently asked questions

How much does tear trough filler cost?

A tear trough treatment is from €349. A small amount of filler is usually enough. The final price is agreed with you beforehand at the free consultation.

Does filler help with puffy bags under the eyes?

Often not. Puffy bags are usually caused by bulging fat or fluid, and filler can make them look heavier. In that case the doctor will advise you to see a plastic surgeon.

How long does tear trough filler last?

On average 9 to 12 months, and for many people longer, because the area moves very little. Depending on the product and your metabolism, it usually lasts somewhere between about 6 and 18 months.

Does tear trough filler help with dark circles?

Only if the darkness is mainly the shadow of a hollow. With pigmentation or visible blood vessels, filler helps little. The doctor will look at the cause during the consultation.

Can tear trough filler be dissolved?

Yes. Because it is hyaluronic acid, the doctor can dissolve the filler with an enzyme if needed. This also applies if the filler shows through the skin.

Does the doctor use a needle or a cannula?

Usually a blunt cannula. Through one small entry point on the cheek, the doctor can spread the filler under the whole tear trough. A cannula has a rounded tip, so the risk of bruising and of hitting a blood vessel is lower than with a sharp needle. If the doctor does choose a needle in your situation, you will be told why beforehand.

Where can I read about experiences with tear trough filler?

We do not publish client stories or before-and-after photos on this website. You can find client reviews on our Google Business Profile. During the free consultation the doctor will show you examples and tell you honestly whether filler suits your eyes.
