Smoker's lines and lip wrinkles treatment in Rotterdam

Smoker's lines are the fine vertical lines above and sometimes below the lip; a very soft filler or a skin booster can soften them, as well as smile lines around the mouth. At Zalat Clinics in Rotterdam, these fine lines are treated by our BIG-registered doctor personally, with small amounts and a product that suits your skin. The aim is smoother skin around the mouth, not bigger lips.

What are smoker's lines?

Smoker's lines, also called lip lines, barcode lines or lip wrinkles, are fine vertical lines in the skin above the upper lip. They are caused by the ring muscle around the mouth, which contracts thousands of times a day when you talk, drink through a straw or purse your lips. You do not need to have smoked: they also become visible in non-smokers over the years.

Smoking, sun damage and thin skin speed up the process. The skin above the lip loses collagen and moisture, the lip itself becomes a little thinner, and so the lines remain visible at rest. Lipstick can then bleed into the lines.

Filler for smoker's lines or a skin booster?

For these fine lines the doctor does not use a firm filler, but a very soft hyaluronic acid filler placed superficially and in tiny amounts into the lines. This softens them straight away without making the lip fuller.

With many fine lines and thin skin, a skin booster such as Profhilo can be a good addition. It improves the quality and hydration of the skin around the mouth over several weeks. A combination often works best: first improve the skin quality, then soften the deepest lines in a targeted way. Sometimes a minimal correction of the lip border also helps, as it supports the skin above it.

Filler for smoker's lines is available from €250 per ml. Often less than 1 ml is needed. The price is agreed with you beforehand at the free consultation.

Smile lines around the mouth

By smile lines around the mouth, people usually mean the lines that appear next to the mouth corners when you laugh, and that over the years remain visible at rest. Sometimes the nasolabial folds are also called smile lines.

Fine smile lines next to the mouth corner often respond well to the same approach: a soft filler in small amounts or a skin booster for the surrounding skin. For a deeper fold from nose to mouth, a different treatment is more suitable, often partly via the cheeks. Smile lines belong to an expressive face; the doctor softens them but does not remove them completely.

Who is it suitable for?

Suitable for women and men aged 18 or over. Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding and not with an active cold sore or skin infection around the mouth. If you often get cold sores, mention it at the consultation. The treatment often suits:

  • fine vertical lines above or below the lip
  • lipstick bleeding into the lines
  • smile lines next to the mouth corners that are visible at rest
  • thin, dry skin around the mouth

How does the treatment work?

  1. 01

    Free consultation

The doctor looks at the skin around the mouth at rest and in motion, and advises whether a soft filler, a skin booster or a combination would help most. You receive a fixed price.

  2. 02

    Preparation

The skin is cleansed and disinfected. Because the skin around the mouth is sensitive, numbing cream is usually applied first.

  3. 03

    Treatment

The doctor places the product with a very fine needle in small droplets. This takes about 30–45 minutes.

  4. 04

    Free check-up after two weeks

After two weeks the filler has settled. At the free check-up we review the result together.

Aftercare and possible side effects

Mild swelling, redness and small bumps are normal in the first days and usually settle by themselves. A bruise is possible. If you are prone to cold sores, the treatment can trigger one. Serious complications are rare; very rarely, filler can block a blood vessel. Contact us straight away if you notice increasing pain or pale or blotchy skin. You can reach the doctor via WhatsApp.

  • for the first 24 hours: no exercise, sauna or alcohol
  • no lipstick or make-up around the mouth on the first day
  • for the first few days, do not drink through a straw or press on the lip

Frequently asked questions

How much does smoker's lines treatment cost?

Filler for smoker's lines is from €250 per ml, and often less than 1 ml is needed. If you choose a skin booster or a combination, you will hear that price beforehand. The final price is agreed at the free consultation.

Will this treatment make my lips fuller?

No. The doctor uses a very soft filler in tiny amounts in the lines themselves. At most the lip becomes a little better defined, not bigger.

How long does the result last?

On average 6 to 12 months. Because the mouth moves a lot, filler is broken down faster here. A skin booster improves the skin gradually and is usually repeated after a few months.

Can smile lines around the mouth be treated?

Yes, fine smile lines next to the mouth corners can be softened with a soft filler or skin booster. For a deep fold from nose to mouth, the doctor will advise a different approach.

I don't smoke, so why do I have lip lines?

These lines are mainly caused by the movement of the mouth muscle, in non-smokers too. Smoking and sun damage speed up the process but are not the only cause.
