Excessive sweating treatment in Rotterdam

Excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis) is treated by injecting a muscle relaxant into the skin, so the sweat glands there temporarily produce much less sweat. In most people underarm sweating decreases clearly and the effect lasts several months. At Zalat Clinics in Rotterdam, BIG-registered doctor Dr. Pravesh Gadjradj performs the treatment personally, for women and men.

How does the treatment for excessive sweating work?

Sweat glands are controlled by nerve signals. A muscle relaxant temporarily blocks that signal where it is injected, so the sweat glands in the armpits produce much less sweat. Your body continues to sweat through the rest of the skin, so temperature regulation is not affected; the armpits contain only a small share of all sweat glands.

Excessive sweating can have a big impact on daily life: sweat marks on clothes, self-consciousness at work or in meetings, and constantly changing shirts. When antiperspirants with aluminium chloride do not help enough, this treatment is a good next step for many people. The effect is temporary, but in most people it lasts longer than wrinkle treatment.

Who is it suitable for?

The treatment is suitable for adults aged 18 and over with primary hyperhidrosis: excessive sweating without an underlying illness. If sweating starts suddenly, occurs mainly at night or affects your whole body, please have your GP rule out a cause first. Not during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

  • You sweat under the arms even at rest or in cool weather
  • Antiperspirants do not help enough or irritate your skin
  • You regularly have visible sweat marks on clothing
  • Sweating affects your work, social life or confidence

What happens during the treatment?

  1. 01

    Free consultation

We discuss your complaints, what you have already tried and your medical history. You receive a fixed price in advance.

  2. 02

    Preparation

Shave your armpits 1–2 days beforehand and do not use deodorant on the day itself. The doctor marks the area where you sweat most.

  3. 03

    Treatment

Many small, superficial injections are given in a grid pattern with a very fine needle. The treatment takes about 30 minutes.

  4. 04

    Free check-up after two weeks

The doctor assesses the effect. If there is a small spot where you still sweat, it can be touched up.

Aftercare and possible side effects

Small bumps and some redness right after treatment are normal and usually disappear within a few hours. A bruise or temporarily tender armpit occasionally occurs. Some people notice slightly more sweating elsewhere, but this is usually limited. If you have questions you can reach the doctor via WhatsApp.

  • Do not use deodorant on the treated skin for the first 24 hours
  • Avoid exercise, sauna and hot baths for 24 hours
  • Preferably wear loose, dark clothing on the day of treatment

How much does excessive sweating treatment cost?

Treatment of both armpits costs from €340. Because the effect lasts on average 4–9 months, most people have treatment once or twice a year. The final price is agreed during the consultation. The consultation and the two-week check-up are free.

Is it harmful to sweat less under the arms?

No. The armpits contain only a small share of all sweat glands. Your body keeps sweating through the rest of the skin and regulates its temperature normally.

You usually notice less sweating within 2–7 days. The full effect is visible after about two weeks.

How long does the effect last?

On average 4–9 months, sometimes longer. It varies from person to person.

Do you also treat hands or feet?

At the moment we focus on the underarms. For excessive sweating of the hands or feet, we discuss the options during the consultation or refer you on.

Is it covered by insurance?

Dutch insurers sometimes cover treatment of severe hyperhidrosis through a dermatologist, under certain conditions. With us it is self-funded, and you know what you will pay in advance.
